A gutter system is only as effective as its downspouts. An undersized or misplaced downspout overwhelms during heavy rain and overflows the gutter; a downspout that discharges right at the foundation funnels roof runoff into your basement. In the Chicago climate — with spring thunderstorm rainfall rates that regularly exceed 1" per hour — downspout sizing and placement are not details you can eyeball.
Dynasty Restoration sizes downspouts correctly for each gutter run's drainage area, places them at the right locations for efficient flow, and terminates them with splash blocks, extensions, or underground drainage systems that move water well away from the house. We also repair and replace damaged downspouts — bent by ladders, knocked loose by storms, or rusted at the transitions.
Sizing and Placement Rules
- Sizing: One downspout outlet per ~20 linear feet of gutter on a 5" K-style system, or ~30 feet on 6" K-style with 3x4" downspouts. Long unbroken runs need additional outlets.
- Outlet location: Near the downhill end of each gutter run, not the middle. This ensures the full gutter slopes toward the outlet.
- Corner placement: Downspouts at inside corners trap debris; we prefer mid-wall or end-of-run placement.
- Discharge distance: Minimum 6 feet from the foundation. More on homes with poor grading or clay soil.
- Underground drainage: For yards with poor drainage or where surface discharge causes erosion, we install 4" PVC lines that carry water to a daylight outlet or pop-up emitter at the yard's low point.
