Picture Windows

Frame the view, maximize daylight, and hit the highest energy ratings

Picture windows are fixed — they don't open. That single design decision delivers three big advantages: more glass area for the same rough opening (no sash frame stealing visible light), the tightest possible weather seal (no moving parts, no weatherstripping to wear), and the best energy ratings available in residential windows. In a typical Chicagoland home, a picture window outperforms an operable window of the same size by 10–20% on air infiltration and 5–15% on U-factor.

They shine in specific applications: living rooms with a view, stairwells, high-mounted fixed units where opening doesn't matter, and as the center of a three-panel arrangement flanked by operable casements or double-hungs on either side. We install picture windows in custom sizes — from small accent units up to oversized glazing that becomes an architectural feature in itself.

When Picture Windows Are the Right Call

  • You have a view — lake, backyard, streetscape — that deserves an unobstructed frame
  • The opening doesn't need ventilation (stairwells, great rooms with operable windows elsewhere, high transom-style locations)
  • You want maximum natural light in a room
  • Energy performance is a top priority and you want the best U-factor and air-infiltration numbers you can get
  • The opening is flanked by operable units already — a common design: casement-picture-casement across a dining room or family room

Sizing and Glass Considerations

Picture windows can be much larger than operable windows because there's no sash or hardware limit. But very large picture windows need thicker glass (typically dual or triple-pane 1" or 1-3/8" sealed units with laminated or tempered glass in certain applications) to meet IRC structural load requirements. We calculate the glass package based on window size, wind zone, and any hazard requirements (door-adjacent, low to floor, above stairs). Oversized units may require crane or multi-person install — we scope that with you up front.

Frequently Asked Questions About Picture Windows

Can I combine picture windows with operable units?
Yes — this is one of the most popular combinations. A large fixed picture window flanked by casements or double-hungs gives you the best of both: open glass in the middle for the view, ventilation on the sides.
Is glass in a picture window as strong as operable window glass?
Yes. The same insulated glass units are used. For oversized picture windows or code-hazard locations (near doors, near floors), we spec tempered or laminated glass as required.
Do picture windows need egress consideration?
If the window is in a bedroom, basement bedroom, or any space where a code-required egress window is needed, the picture window cannot serve that role — a separate egress-compliant operable window is required. We check this during the measure.
